Jute is a special vegetable fiber made from the stem and outer skin of the jute plant. These fibers are rich in cellulose and lignin making their by-products such as textiles tough and durable. Jute plants can be found in the Bengal Delta Plain in Bangladesh and India as well as locally. They are known as “saluyot” in Ilocos and Western Visayas.
What is Jute Used For?

How Are They Made?
The process of turning jute plants into fabrics for eco-bags is called retting. In the process, the fibers are extracted by bundling the stems together and submerging them under slow running water. Once retting is complete, the excess materials are carefully scraped off and the crucial fibers are painstakingly pulled out from the stem. This delicate process is part of what makes jute bags sustainable!
